Vacancy: Media and Advocacy Officer
The Australian High Commission, New Delhi, is seeking applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Media and Advocacy Officer at the Australian High Commission, New Delhi.

Subject to the successful completion of six months probationary period, satisfactory medical check and background verification, the successful applicant will be offered a two-year contract of employment, inclusive of the probation period. The contract may be extended subject to agreement between the employer and employee.
The commencing salary will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The package will include annual leave, limited medical reimbursements, Diwali bonus, provident fund provisions and gratuity provisions when service length is sufficient. The position encompasses a starting salary of 61, 963 per month.

About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
Work within the Public Diplomacy Section to implement the Australian High Commission’s media and advocacy strategies to advance Australia’s interests in India, increase public understanding of Australian policies, and project a positive image of Australia.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate the High Commission’s media events, activities and campaigns, including in support of high level visitors and the High Commission’s public diplomacy programming.
- Develop programs of targeted activities to advance Australia’s public diplomacy objectives, and build new audiences for Australia’s public diplomacy.
- Build productive partnerships and relationships with Indian counterparts across government, the media, the private sector, academic and think tank institutions.
- Assist with content development for the High Commission’s web and social media activities.
- Assist with drafting, producing and distribution of a wide range of media products including social media content, media releases, web content, speeches, op-ed pieces and media talking points.
- Monitor print, broadcast and social media and provide daily clippings service relevant to Australia’s interests in India.
Qualifications/Experience
- University degree in the social or political sciences, for example in mass communications.
- High level English language skills
- At least five years’ experience working in the media or as a public relations officer for a diplomatic mission or similar organisation.
- Ability to work as well as part of a team
- Ability to prioritize tasks and flexibility in accepting tasking, working on joint projects and doing what is necessary to get the job done.
- Well versed with the Microsoft suite of products, particularly Excel. Skills in design using PowerPoint and similar programs desirable.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Good written English and oral communication skills. (Short-listed candidates will be required to undertake a writing skills assessment at the same time as their interview.)
- An ability to deliver outcomes for the Australian High Commission’s public diplomacy strategies. A strong and demonstrated network of journalist contacts.
- Proven ability to build and maintain professional networks. Ability to interact with top level government and non-government stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and event management skills. Demonstrated drive and initiative. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a small team in a large mission.
- A demonstrated understanding of cultural, media and public policy issues relating to Australia’s interests in India
