Launched in 2023 by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Centre for Australia-India Relations (CAIR) serves as a national platform to deepen understanding and foster collaboration between Australia and India. The Centre’s work is focused on four key areas: promoting policy dialogue; building India business literacy and links; engaging Indian diaspora communities to support the bilateral relationship; and deepening cultural connections and mutual understanding.
Maitri (meaning friendship in Sanskrit) grants administered by the Centre are deepening Australia’s links with India and allowing for closer collaboration between our two countries.
The programs, which include Maitri Grants and Maitri Scholarships and Fellowships, aim to support sectoral collaboration, creative exchanges, scholarships, and meaningful policy and academic discourse. Beyond the Maitri initiatives, CAIR nurtures dialogue between government and civil society through annual policy discussions and events. The Centre also seeks to be a catalyst for collaboration between Australian and Indian businesses and leverages the expertise of Australia’s Indian communities to bolster trade and investment ties.
