The Australian High Commission, New Delhi, is seeking applications for the position of Research Officer in the Defence section.

The position is open to Australian citizens only. The successful applicant will be required to have or obtain an Australian security clearance. Currently holding an Australian security clearance would be an advantage.

The job description for the position is attached. Also attached are the selection criteria that the Interviewing Committee will use to assess applicants’ suitability for the position. Applicants must address each of the selection criteria. Candidates should submit a written application (no longer than 3 pages) that directly addresses the selection criteria, providing specific examples of relevant experience. Candidates should also submit curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees. Applications that do not specifically address the selection criteria will not be considered. Subject to the successful completion of a three-month probationary period, the successful applicant will be offered a two-year contract of employment. The contract maybe extended subject to agreement between the employer and employee.

The commencing monthly salary is Rs 158,643.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The role of the Defence Research Officer is to provide research and analytical support to the Defence Adviser and First Secretary Defence in the Defence Section of the Australian High Commission, New Delhi.

Duties include:

• Research and maintain databases and information on the Indian and Sri Lankan Armed Forces and Ministries of Defence.

• Analyse the impacts and likely outcomes of Indian and Sri Lankan defence key events, policies and politics.

• Research and report on events in neighboring countries which may impact on defence relationships in India and Sri Lanka.

• Research the trends and activities of government defence organisations, research institutions and private ‘think tanks’. Maintain administrative contacts with these organisations and assist with arranging meetings for defence officers and visitors.

• Monitor Indian military developments in the area of major capital procurements and capability development.

• Provide research and analytical input to defence briefs and biographies.

• Monitor local media and defence-related websites for items of relevance to defence.

• Attend defence-related conferences and seminars, and report on outcomes.

• Maintain electronic and magazine subscriptions and the defence office library.

• Maintain broader databases as directed

 

 

 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

 

1. Demonstrated analytical experience relevant to understanding South Asian defence policies, capabilities, trends and activities.

2. Demonstrated ability to liaise with government and military officials, and defence industry, academic and civil society representatives.

3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and enhance relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

4. Demonstrated ability to use various primary and secondary research tools and ability to utilise the Microsoft suite of products.

5. Demonstrated oral and verbal communication skills.

6. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and meet deadlines.

7. Desirable: Understanding of Australian defence and strategic policies, engagements and relationships.
