The Australian High Commission, New Delhi, is seeking applications for the position of Research Officer for the Economic Section.
The job description for the position is attached. Also attached are the selection criteria that the Interviewing Committee will use to assess applicants’ suitability for the position. Subject to the successful completion of a three-month probationary period the successful applicant will be offered a two-year contract of employment. The contract maybe extended subject to agreement between the employer and employee.
The monthly salary will range from Rupees 44,891 to Rupees 87,499 per month, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.

Job Description
Research Work
1. As part of the Political and Economic research team, carry out research and analysis and prepare ad hoc reports on a wide range of economic issues.
2. Monitor, analyse and contribute to reporting on India’s economic and trade relationships with regional countries and major powers.
3. Maintain up-to-date economic overview briefs on India (including the major Indian states) with particular regard to issues of interest to Australia, for use by High Commission staff and high-level visitors.
4. Carry out research and analysis, and prepare reports and overview briefs on issues related to India’s domestic politics, and foreign and strategic policies, as required.
5. Assist with daily scanning and distribution of relevant developments in media published in English, on government websites and regarding think tank activities.
6. Build strong linkages with members of relevant think tanks, academics and NGOs to ensure a good coverage of contemporary India thinking on political, economic and security issues.
Administrative Support
7. Maintain accurate records of changes in government and the bureaucracy, and manage the High Commission’s senior contacts database.
8. Working closely with the Visits Co-ordinator, provide administrative and logistical coordination and support for official visit programs.
9. Strengthen High Commission links with ministerial offices and relevant officials.
10. Provide support for the political and economic team, including by preparing research reports, building linkages with the government and non-government sectors, and setting appointments.
Selection Criteria
1. Very strong English language skills (both written and spoken).
2. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
3. Experience in carrying out research and analysis on a wide range of Indian economic issues. A particular expertise in Indian economic policy would be highly regarded.
4. A well-developed understanding of Indian political and bureaucratic structures and processes.
5. Knowledge of Australia, including Australian foreign and trade policy approaches and objectives, would be an advantage.
6. Strong ability to liaise with government officials, industry, academic and civil society representatives regarding meetings and visits.
7. Ability to use relevant office technology, including the Internet and computer software (particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
8. Strong administrative and organizational skills, including ability to manage events, programs and visiting delegations.
9. Strong judgment and problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative, as required.
10. Ability to work flexibly and take on multiple tasks in a team environment.
