Celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

On 4 June 2025, the Australian High Commission hosted a gala reception to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was signed on this day in 2020.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Richard Marles MP, was in New Delhi to mark the occasion. He highlighted what India and Australia have achieved over those five years and re-committed to a new phase of ambition in what is one of Australia’s most important partnerships globally. The Minister for External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, attended the reception as the Guest of Honour.

Over the past five years, there has been extraordinary growth in Australia-India ties. Together, we have:

• enhanced our defence ties, increasing annual exercises and activities

• signed the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, which has strengthened both of our economies, and committed to concluding a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement

• transformed our education ties into a true partnership, with Australian universities welcoming nearly 140,000 Indian students in 2024, and establishing the first foreign branch campuses in India

• launched a Renewable Energy Partnership, under which Australian expertise will help deliver Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to roll out ten million solar rooftops in India by 2030

• strengthened cultural and people-to-people ties, including through the Australian Government’s Centre for Australia-India Relations, which has elevated the voices of Indian Australians.

Australia and India share a vision for a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Our partnership is underpinned by collaboration that spans many sectors, including science and technology, defence, skills and education, clean energy, agriculture, culture, and many more.

Quote attributable to the Australian High Commissioner, Philip Green: “We are delighted to celebrate this major anniversary of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Over five years, our countries have been drawn together by strategic alignment, economic complementarity, and dynamic people-topeople connections. We have even bigger ambitions for the next five years.
