VACANCY: RESEARCH OFFICER
CUSTOMS AND BORDER PROTECTION POSITION
The Australian High Commission is seeking a suitably qualified person to fill the position of Research Officer for the Customs ad Border Protection Section.
A job description for the position is attached. Also attached are the selection criteria that the Interview Panel will use to assess applicants’ suitability for the position. Applicants must address each of the selection criteria and provide contact details of at least two referees.
Subject to the successful completion of a three month probationary period, the successful applicant will be offered a contract of employment of up to two years. The contract may be extended subject to agreement between the employer and employee.
The commencing monthly salary is Rs 47,049 in a range of Rupees 47,049 to Rupees 68,718 per month.

Job Description
1. Establish systems, processes and manage the accounts and budget of Customs and Border Protection Office including monitoring and maintaining accurate documentation of expenditure;
2. With minimal supervision, carry out research and analysis and prepare ad hoc reports on customs, border enforcement, trade facilitation and people smuggling related issues;
3. Monitor, analyse and contribute to reporting on India’s diplomatic, economic, trade and security relationships within South Asia, as well as with major powers;
4. Maintain economic overview briefs on major Indian states, with particular regard to issues of interest to Australia, for use by diplomatic staff and visiting dignitaries;
5. Maintain accurate records on changes in government and the bureaucracy, including regular updating of the High Commission’s senior contacts database;
6. Assist with official visits from Australia to India, and visits within India by the High Commissioner and other diplomatic staff.
7. Other duties as assigned by Counsellor (Customs and Border Protection).
Selection Criteria
1. Extensive experience in carrying out research and analysis on a wide range of Indian government related issues. Experience in the customs or trade facilitation desirable;
2. Strong English and Hindi language skills (both written and spoken);
3. A well-developed understanding of Indian bureaucratic structures and processes;
4. High level organisational skills;
5. Ability to use relevant office technology, including the Internet and computer software (particularly Word);
6. Ability to work flexibly, and take on multiple tasks in a team environment;
7. Interest in and knowledge of Australia, including Australian foreign and trade policy approaches and objectives, and
8. Ability to be granted and hold an Australian security clearance.
