WORK HOURS: Full-time; 37.5 hours Monday to Friday
STARTING SALARY: circa Rs. 66,000

The Australian Consulate General, Chennai, is seeking applications for the position of Counter People-Smuggling Program Manager & Education Outreach Manager.

The job description for the position and the selection criteria that the Interviewing Committee will use to assess applicants’ suitability for the positions, are enclosed. Applicants must address each of the selection criteria. Applications that do not specifically address the selection criteria will not be considered.

This is an expected vacancy at this time. Any employment at the Consulate General is offered subject to the successful completion of pre-employment Police and medical checks. Engagement will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of six (6) months.

The salary package includes annual leave, medical and accident insurance, Diwali bonus and provident fund provisions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Counter People Smuggling: (50%)

Under the direction of the Deputy Consul-General as part of the policy team, the Counter People-Smuggling Program Manager will:

1. Maintain close working-level liaison with relevant NGOs, relevant government authorities to prevent people-smuggling;

2. Collect information and draft timely on people-smuggling activities;

3. Assess and report on the situation on the ground as it affects people smuggling;

4. Monitor Tamil and English language media for information on people-smuggling activities;

5. Contribute to the development of counter people-smuggling advocacy materials and campaigns;

6. Assist with translation and editing of Tamil-language counter-people smuggling advocacy materials;

7. Develop a network of specialised media relationships to facilitate post’s counter people-smuggling advocacy;

8. Advocate and explain the Australian Government’s policies to prevent people-smuggling;

9. Other duties as directed, including to work as backup personal assistant to the Consul-General.

Education Outreach (50%)

Under the direction of the Deputy Consul-General as part of the policy team, the Education Outreach Manager will:

1. Maintain close working-level liaison with the Australian Alumni Association in Chennai and chapters in other cities in South India;

2. Program and manage events associated to promote Australian alumni and the New Colombo Plan in South India and prepare post-event reporting;

3. Contribute to the development of materials and campaigns to promote Australian education in South India;

4. Develop a network of specialised relationships with educational institutions, service providers and facilitators in South India;

5. Other duties as directed, including to work as backup personal assistant to the Consul-General.

 

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

 

All applicants must make their claims, with reference to the above duties, against the following selection criteria:

1. Strong administrative, organisational and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability in managing and coordinating events, programs, and/or visiting delegations.

2. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility in being able to accept and/or share tasks.

3. Proven ability to liaise competently with senior government officials, media and industry representatives, academics and civil society representatives. Established existing contacts an advantage.

4. Excellent ability to speak and write clearly in both English and Tamil is essential. A working knowledge of Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu is an advantage.

5. Good understanding of standard office technology, in particular Microsoft Office software and social media functions.

6. Budget management skills and advantage.

7. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
