WORK HOURS: Full-time; 37.5 hours Monday to Friday
STARTING SALARY: circa Rs. 53,000

The Australian Consulate General, Chennai is seeking applications for the position of Cashier.

The job description for the position and the selection criteria that the Interviewing Committee will use to assess applicants’ suitability for the positions, are enclosed. Applicants must address each of the selection criteria. Applications that do not specifically address the selection criteria will not be considered.

Employment is offered subject to the successful completion of pre-employment Police and medical checks. Engagement will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of six (6) months.

The salary package includes annual leave, medical and accident insurance, Diwali bonus and provident fund provisions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The position is located in the Corporate Services Section of the Australian Consulate-General which is responsible for management of post's financial resources (budget management.); ensuring compliance with policy issues and the Financial Management Manual (FMM) and formulating new post-specific policies in line with legislative, departmental and Commonwealth policy. The positions reports to the Accountant. As the Cashier, you will be responsible for the provision of financial processing services to the Consulate-General.
Cashier’s duties will include the following:

1. Perform cashier functions covering:
• Taking care and custody of public money
• Taking care and custody of accountable documents
• Issuing of receipts
• Banking of collections

2. Process all official payments by the Consulate

3. Provide back-up Consular and Passport services to the Consular Team which may include the following:

• Responding to initial enquiries from Australian citizens, conducting interviews, processing applications and monitoring progress of passport applications
• Providing timely advice and reporting on consular cases
• Maintaining consular and passport records and statistics.

4. Process staff expenses, including preparing and transmitting reimbursement claims, salaries, rents and pensions.

5. Hold the cashier advance and act as back-up funds controller, under the supervision of the Accountant.

6. Process Petty Cash Expenses

7. Responsibility for training of the Alternate Cashier

8. Manage Official Telephone Accounts with the service provider

9. Perform other duties as directed.

Note This position provides back-up passport and consular services at the Consulate-General under the supervision of the First Secretary, Consul and Senior Administrative Officer.
 

SELECTION CRITERIA

All applicants must make their claims, with reference to the above duties, against the following selection criteria:

1. Strong accounting background with experience and sound knowledge and experience of Financial Accounting software, including SAP.

2. Proven ability to take initiative, respond to challenges and set priorities. Proven ability to adapt to different work environments.

3. Able to demonstrate strict attention to detail in processing work, and working efficiently and independently to complete tasks in a timely manner.

4. Record keeping and data management skills, including demonstrated ability to monitor and analyse information to solve problems

5. Strong oral and written communication skills in English and Tamil. A working knowledge of Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and/or Telugu would be an advantage.

6. Ability to handle sensitive personal and business information in a confidential manner.

7. Good organisational and interpersonal skills and a polite and courteous telephone manner when dealing with outside clients.

8. Proficiency in using other computerized information management and office systems, in particular Excel.
