PA/12/15 Indian Treasures Unveiled

INDIAN TREASURES UNVEILED IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A series of stunning artworks and objects from India will go on display in Australia tomorrow as part of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s new exhibition – “Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices.”

The exhibition includes 10 treasures from the Museum of Christian Art in Goa and the Archdiocesan Heritage Museum of Mumbai.

“Treasure Ships” is an ambitious exhibition which captures the exchange of goods and ideas between East and West during the ‘Age of Spices’ in the 16th to 19th centuries. It features 300 works of ceramics, decorative arts, furniture, metalware, paintings, prints, engravings and textiles from Australia, India, Portugal, Singapore and the United States.

The Indian works include a beautiful ivory figure of an infant Jesus from Old Goa and a monstrance originally from the Church of St Joseph, Juhu, Bombay. Images of all these treasures are attached. You can also download more images from the exhibition (including more objects from India) at the Art Gallery of South Australia’s website here - http://www.artgallery.sa.gov.au/agsa/home/Media_Centre/2015/Treasure_Ships/Index.html

“Treasure Ships” is another example of the strong cultural collaboration between Australia and India following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Arts and Culture in November 2014, witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The Australian Government is very grateful to the National Museum of India for helping to facilitate the loans from Indian institutions for this exhibition.

“Treasure Ships” will open to the public on Saturday June 13.
