Statement by Australian High Commissioner Harinder Sidhu, who paid her respects to the family of Manmeet Sharma (also known as Alisher) on 3 November at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi

I am here to offer my deepest condolences to the family of Manmeet Sharma (also known as Alisher).

On behalf of the Government and my fellow Australians, we are all deeply saddened by the death of Mr Sharma, who had made Australia his home and took up citizenship earlier this year.

Australia has lost a valued member of the community.

Thousands of people across the nation have gathered at numerous memorial services in recent days to pay their respects.

Brisbane City Council will honour Mr Sharma with a permanent memorial, which will be decided in consultation with the local community.

We continue to work to make sense of this horrific and senseless crime, and assist the family where we are able.

The Brisbane City Council has set up a fund to assist the family and made a $10,000 contribution.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Prime Minister Modi on Sunday that this matter would be fully investigated and I can reiterate that assurance today.
